Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
